The Outcome
Algal BloomsAlgal Blooms are a rapid increase in the production of algae. They are usually caused by the excess nutrients in the water from fertilizer run-off. The algae eats all the nutrients in the water and continues to reproduce.
Red TidesRed Tides appear because the number of algae in the algal blooms have exceeded their limit and they begin to discolor the water. During this time the oxygen levels in the water are severely depleted; the red tides may also release toxins that are very dangerous for humans and marine animals.
Dead ZonesDead zones are the outcome of red tides and algal blooms. In a dead zone all of the oxygen has been depleted and their is no life anywhere. The water is usually discolored in a dead zone.
